My Favorite Drugstore Beauty Buys

By: Kelly Bauer

We’ve all done it – went to Ulta or Sephora for one product, end up spending $200 and in the end only liking 2 of the 5 products we bought. Why not save that extra cash for clothes, shoes, or a puppy (!) and check out some more affordable options that work just as well (if not better than) the name–brand products we all love/hate to buy.

Foundation
I used to be an avid Mac user, for all things makeup–related, until a friend turned me on to Wet n Wild Photo Focus Foundation. Yes, I said Wet n Wild! This is easily the best foundation I have ever used and I will never use Mac for my foundation again! This foundation is full coverage yet super light, with an all–day hold. The best part about it, it’s only $6!

Eyebrow Kit
I have extremely blond hair, so if I don’t put my eyebrows on I look like someone shaved my whole face. That being said, I used to use Mac (surprise) Brow Duo to fill in my eyebrows, but, every once in a while, I will buy a cheap, random product – just for fun – and this time was a win! Elf has an Eyebrow Kit for just $3 and it is a perfect combination of gel and powder! I like it because it is not just a powder but has a darker gel base that makes the color stay longer. Also, the powder goes on top so it has a natural feel.

Eyeliner
I think we’ve all had that problem with eyeliner where it ends up on the top of your lid like you drew an extra line up there for no reason. Well, I found a cheapie that doesn’t do that! I used to be obsessed with Kat Von D Tattoo eyeliner but I have now switched to L’Oreal Paris Cosmetics Infallible Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner. They are exactly the same, except one is $20 and the other is $14!

Subscription Box
This one isn’t exactly a Drugstore Beauty Buy, but if you are a makeup junkie like me, the best money you could spend is on an Ipsy membership. It’s $10 a month and each month you get sample sizes (usually full sizes) of 5 beauty products, that come in a cute little bag. You can customize your profile to the type of items you would like to receive and what colors/shades you like best. This is a great way to try new products that you’ve always wanted to try, but for a minimal fee.

Thank you! Another great monthly subscription box is Birchbox, which also provides makeup and beauty samples!

Love this! I totally agree that some of the drugstore beauty products are very much comparable to the higher end lines. The trick is knowing how to apply makes all of the difference! Great and fun article!

Completely agree! And there are lots of tutorials online to help you find products that really are the same in terms of quality. If you can save money, why not, right?!

Love it. I am not much of one to wear makeup, partially because I’m intimidated by it. But if I can start off with something inexpensive but awesome, I might be more prone to use it more.

Agreed! When I buy cheaper products, I don’t feel like I am wasting as much if I just don’t like to wear the product.

I didn’t know that brand wasn’t in the UK! If I find anything similar that is available in the UK, I’ll let you know 🙂

I would certainly recommend L’Oreal Superstar fine liner! Always worked a treat for me 😀 Goes to show that, sometimes, the high end brands just aren’t worth the extra money!

This is why I never walk into high end make up stores!! I cannot afford that sort of expenditure at all, but there are so many great cheap products!! Glad you’ve found some you love!!
