If you are anything like me, the pressure of making the most of your days (and weeks and months and years and life) can cause you to dwell on your to–do list, commitments, responsibilities and forget to really enjoy your time. You may feel stressed, burnt out or even just bored trying to keep up with all of the demands of life. Sounding familiar?
For everyone, the best way to deal with the stress of life or the boredom of life, is different. Finding what helps you feel connected to yourself and your life is a personal journey and shouldn’t also be one of the pressures of life. For me, personally, I find that taking some time to myself, to do the things I enjoy, helps me feel more centered and relaxed during my day–to–day.
Here are 5 things you can do by yourself, to help you reduce your stress and increase your enjoyment.

Take an online class
Is there something you have always wanted to learn, but never seem to find the time? Does everything else seem more important? Well, what if you reframe your mindset and acknowledge that things you are passionate about are equally (if not more!) important (health and well–being, ahem) than the things you have to do? A new skill adds value to your life, provides you with a passion hobby and depending on the skill, might help you copy with different aspects of your life in new ways.
One of my favorite things to do is take a book to the park and sit in the sunshine and read. My day job, as a graphic designer, requires me to stare at a computer screen for 8 hours a day, indoors, so getting fresh air and allowing my eyes to read something with less strain really is a treat for me. Reading is a great way to distract yourself from real–life problems and it can be a stress–reliever for many.
Start a new outdoor hobby
In a 2012 study, it was shown that after only 4 days of immersion in nature, cognitive functions related to creativity and critical thinking increased by 50%. 50%! If that isn’t a great excuse to put down the technology that is stressing you, I don’t know what is. A great way to get outdoors more, is through an outdoor hobby. Having something you enjoy, that you can look forward to, can help you stay relaxed through difficult deadlines and meetings.
Go to the farmers market and cook what you buy
Eating healthy is an excellent way to keep your mind healthy as well. One way to do this is by shopping at your local farmers market! Local, fresh and seasonal food options might leave you feeling inspired to get in the kitchen. As you walk around, think about different recipes you could make and the ingredients you could switch out for the healthier ones around you.
Relax like a beauty blogger
Indulging in self–care doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. Take your cue from beauty bloggers and relax by pampering yourself with a luxurious weeknight routine. Take a bath, do your nails, light your favorite candle, put on your favorite music and of course, be sure to finish it up (or start with!) a relaxing face mask.
- Make a fruit–infused alkaline water, such as lemon and blueberry
- Soak in a luxurious bath soak and throw on a comfy robe after
- Throw on a purifying sheet mask
- Tend to your nails at–home with a nude polish
- Light a lavender candle
