5 Book Club Recommended Reads for 2017

Selecting a book to read for a book club is no easy task. There are a lot of different people, with a lot of different preferences. Do you choose a non–fiction story, a harrowing classic? Or, maybe a thrilling and chilling true–crime novel? There are many factors to consider: Is the story compelling enough to evoke a discussion; Is the story gripping enough for the readers to finish it; Is the page limit such that it can be read within the timeframe suggested?

Because these books are so thoughtfully selected, what better way to select your next read, than choosing one already suggested by a real life book club? These five titles are librarian recommended and have been read and discussed in a small town book club, so you know they will be good! If you have a recommendation yourself, let us know in the comments below.

1.) The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin

You all know of Charles Lindberg (1927 solo flight across the Atlantic) but do you know his wife Anne Lindberg, first licensed female glider pilot in the United States? This book chronicles the marriage and history of one of the world’s most astonishing couples and sheds light on some lesser known facts of Charles Lindberg’s celebrated life and accomplishments. Triumph and tragedy mixed into one.

2.) The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

Buy: Amazon or check out from your local library!

This is the type of novel you might find yourself reading in one sitting! This is the story of a couple and their baby on the night of a domestic crime, with twists and turns and a complicated story weaving through the plot. With betrayal, deception and secrets, this novel is a phycological thriller that will keep you enthralled all the way through to the last page.

3.) Fly A Little Higher by Laura Sobeich

Buy: Amazon or check out from your local library!

This true story, is sad but uplifting. Zach Sobeich, was a teenager battling cancer, when he wrote the viral song, Clouds, after his mom (Laura) told him to think about writing goodbye letters to his friends and family. This book is a memoir about truth, grace, faith and hope and how God answered their small prayers in a big way and allowed this 18–year–old boy to touch the lives of those around him. This might leave you with tears in your eyes, but it will also leave you feeling inspired.

4.) The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz

Buy: Amazon or check out from your local library!

This award–winning book is a beautiful piece written through the lens of a young girls diary in the 1900s. It follows a teenage girl as she works for a Jewish family, while pursuing Christianity and touches on topics of literature, love and loyalty. It is great for young readers and those who love historical fiction and coming–of–age stories. Intriguing and thoughtful, this is a choice that will not disappoint.

5.) Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris

Buy: Amazon or check out from your local library!

This New York Times and USA Today bestselling phycological thriller is a must–read. This story takes the saying “You never know what’s going on behind closed doors” to the extreme, nightmare–ish side, leaving you truly haunted. Be warned: this is a tale that is shocking, disturbing and will stay in your head for days to come. Jack and Grace, the couple in the book, seem to be perfect to the outside world, but in private, Grace’s home life situation is anything but. Another can’t–put–it–down novel!

I just finished Behind Closed Doors as well! I thought it was really good and the ending had me shook. However I feel like the build up to the true nature of Grace and Jack’s relationship could’ve been a bit more subtle as it revealed a lot quite early on.

Agreed, the author could have built up the relationship slower, but overall, I thought it was a great book!
