The Importance of Winding Down in a Hyperconnected World

Guest post: Tony Soloman, Media Gurus

What triggers us to get up every day and face the great big world is our energy, will and productivity. When feeling at our best, we get the most out of this sacred trinity, especially in our business life.  If by any chance, one of these aspects is out of balance, we could feel drained, lethargic or too passive in the workplace. Nowadays, many professionals are drawing attention to the importance of winding down in this hyperconnected world, not only as to keep a productive workflow in a company, but also as to keep the employee smiling as well.

Therefore, here are some ways for you to unwind for a moment from the digital jungle:

Enjoy the silence

While certain sounds can be pleasing to our ears, other sounds can contribute to our frustrations. Sometimes even Skype message sounds or the melody on a smartphone is enough to put you in a bad mood. Silence is a perfect moment to truly unwind, contemplate and re-energize. Every person should have at least one moment of silence to clear their thoughts. You can have it anytime and anywhere. For example, during a coffee break, in the morning before jogging or while meditating. Enjoying the silence is easy and effective.

One at a time

Naturally, we live in this digital jungle where we are expected to answer and proofread all the e-mails while reports and deadlines keep piling up. Multitasking is a must. However, only a few lucky ones possess this kind of talent. For us who do not operate in such way, here are some easy-to-do tips:

  • First of all, do one task at a time. By doing so, mistakes are unlikely to happen.
  • In the case of many heavy tasks, prioritize and do only the urgent ones. Then, deal with other tasks.
  • Decide how much time you will spend on each task.
  • Never refuse help if you need it.

Go offline

When working in an office, spending too much time in front of the computer can have harmful effects on your physical and mental state. Usually, various information that you receive can make you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. As a result, neither your productivity nor energy will thrive as it should. So, it’s high time you disconnected from those social media accounts. Learn to enjoy your life just by appreciating small things, like sunny weather. Take a photo to cherish that moment, but refrain from posting it online. Enjoy your meal without Instagram. Live your life offline.

Make time for family

The best way to wind down is probably with the family. However, with many daily chores and obligations, it is impossible to find free time, especially if you are a working parent. Therefore, it’s just more convenient to let an expert handle a critical situation e.g. broken appliance. For example, my washer broke down recently, so I called Total Appliance Asko Repair service and that saved me time to spend with my family. Sometimes, you can not do everything by yourself and your family relaxation time should not suffer because of it.

Go wild

There’s no better way to relax and re-energize than by doing some outdoor activities. Some simple activities like hiking in nature or camping during a weekend will definitely do you some good. The greenery of the wilderness will soothe your eyes and mind. Even when you have time for a half an hour coffee break, consider going to the nearest park to unwind and make yourself feel at ease. Doing outdoor exercise, such as jogging or bicycle riding, shall lift your spirits. Even gardening can have therapeutic effects.

Work your best, live to the fullest

It’s not unusual to feel overpowered by the hectic pace of life. Lack of time to relax, to unwind in nature and to spend with the family can have dire effects on our energy, will and productivity. However, we need these qualities, especially in the workplace. Therefore, remember to take it one at a time, live offline and make time for the family and for yourself. Hopefully, by following these easy-to-do tips, not only will you keep working at your best, but you will also live your life to the fullest.

Disconnecting from the world sometimes is helpful. I’m on vacation right now, so I intend to take winding down to a new level.
