5 Worthwhile Charities To Get Involved With

Giving back to the community is likely something that is on your mind from time to time, but you may put it off because you don’t know how to offer your support. An easy way to contribute is through small financial donations to your favorite charities. Many people already know this but struggle to find a charitable organization that they feel they can trust. With so many options available, researching them can feel like one more task to check off your to–do list. Don’t worry, you are not alone! To help, I put together a list of 5 charities that you can get involved with today.

Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs of America

For over 150 years, The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of America has been helping millions of kids across the country. This charity provides a safe place for kids to learn, while making lasting connections and developing essential skills. According to BGCA data, 88% of their kids complete a post–secondary education and 74% volunteer in their communities at least once a year. BCGA offers programs in sports, education, the arts, health and wellness, career development and leadership, with a focus on keeping kids off the streets, providing a caring environment and shaping the lives of kids and teens in need.

Feeding America

In the U.S., 1 in 8 people struggle with hunger, including nearly 13 million children and over 5 million seniors. Many of these people are faced with the tough decision of choosing to feed themselves and their families, or pay medical bills, pay their rent or have access to transportation. Feeding America is a hunger-relief organization that includes 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, such as school-based food pantries, emergency disaster relief, and Kids’ Cafe. For every $1 donated, the Feeding America network of food banks secures and distributes 10 meals to people facing hunger.

Women’s Sports Foundation

This charity was founded by tennis legend Billie Jean King, to help create female leaders. Through education, advocacy, financial means and research, the foundation has provided playing opportunities to young girls throughout the country. The WSF believes that equal access and opportunity to sports and an active lifestyle helps improves the lives of women and their goal is to encourage and support that mission. A donation to the Women’s Sports Foundation will provide direct support for advocacy and education programs, promote the positive development of young girls through sports and continue to build a powerful legacy for the future of the Foundation.

Environmental Defense Fund

A stable climate, sustainable fishing, clean water, and clean air are the key initiatives of the Environment Defense Fund. They are fighting for the key environmental challenges that are affecting the world currently, and helping ensure lasting food security. They are making consumer products safer, keeping the fish populations healthy, helping reduce pollution emissions, and helping boost energy efficiency. Every dollar donated makes a difference in the fight to defend our bedrock environmental standards and protect climate progress.

The Emily Program Foundation

More than 30 million Americans have an eating disorder, including 200,000 Minnesotans. The Emily Program Foundation works to end eating disorders and strengthen mental health. Through classroom talks, seminars, community workshops, and other forums they help increase education and awareness of eating disorders and related issues. The Foundation offers support to the Emily Program which offers outpatient, intensive day/partial programs with lodging, and 24/7 residential care to individuals with eating disorders.
