Some say the key to success is to always be learning. One way that I do this is to write down a list of my interests and then find online classes that allow me to pursue those interests at a minimal cost. Learning something new is important to me because it helps me be a better creative thinker and problem solver, both of which are essential to being a designer.
Whatever your career path, you likely have some interests that seem time-consuming and costly to learn. Lucky you, with the growth of technology, there is almost always an online, affordable class that allows you to pursue your passion without spending an entire paycheck. With this 7-Day Challenge, the goal is to choose one week (7 continuous days) in which you can devote one hour a day to continuing education. Each day, choose a topic that interests you and using online learning platforms, watch and participate in a class or two. At the end of the week, review your favorites and schedule time each month to continuing learning more about those topics. Your future self will thank you!
Keep reading to see what topics I will be focusing on next week.
When I was growing up, I always dreamed that I would grow up to be a writer. While I ended up taking a different career path that I now couldn’t imagine not doing, I still love to write (hence why I have this blog) and still think about writing a novel. However, I do not have that much training or knowledge about how to go about writing a novel. For my first day of learning, I will be focusing on writing. Here are three classes that I am considering taking.
- Creative Writing for Impact: Looking Inward & Outward in Personal Essay
- Creative Nonfiction: Write Truth with Style
- Writing Character-Driven Short Stories
As a graphic design major, I also took a handful of fine art classes in college and I loved learning about different mediums and techniques. I often apply that things I learned in those classes to my design work. One art class that I never took was watercolor, but it has been high on my list of things to do for a while. I often color as a way to relieve stress and I feel like I could use watercolor painting in a similar way!

As I get older, I realize more and more how important it is to save for the future and have a better understanding of my finances. One financial topic I don’t know much about is investing. For day three of this 7-Day Challenge, I am going to focus on investing. This is one topic I can see me really applying to my day-to-day life. Brit + Co has a really great Investing 101 class sponsored by Robinhood, an investing app, so I plan on watching that one!
My mom sent me an embroidery hoop, thread and needles earlier this year and I am dying to learn more! For day 4 of the challenge, I am going to do just that. There are so many great YouTube tutorials online for embroidery, and I am looking forward to watching a couple. The pattern my mom sent me is of a hedgehog, and I can’t wait to hang him up when done.

As a graphic designer and blogger, I am constantly using photography in all my projects, but I struggle to take my own photographs and edit them well. I took a photography workshop with a friend last year and loved everything I learned. To brush up on my skills, I am going to focus on photography for day 5.
I have a confession to make: I am a terrible cook. Mostly, I don’t like cooking but I also don’t feel like I can really make an entire meal from scratch. I would love to change this, however, and taking some online cooking classes could be valuable. I am not confident with my knife skills, using healthy ingredients or cooking with meats.

I am a big advocate of having fresh flowers around the house and as giving them as gifts. I am not great at choosing flowers and arranging them, however, so I have always wanted to get a crash course on that. I love visiting the flower shop in town, so I am going to pick up some flowers and greens this week and take an online class on flower arranging. Then I can give flowers as gifts more often!
